Councilman’s ‘warning’ was unnecessary, impolite

When the Rev. Joe Szulwach of St. Lawrence Parish, Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge, appeared at our Township Council meeting Monday Aug. 12, it was a pleasant event.

I commend Father Joe for taking the time to care so much. How often do we see a priest with a busy schedule come out and praise our police and civil servants? It was heartwarming, especially with the anniversary of 9/11 fast approaching. I’m sure all the police and firefighters were thankful for his comments and suggestions. A memorial, perhaps even on the beach front, where we all watched the tragedy, would be a very appropriate choice to consider for holding an outdoor service.

What I found appalling was the "three-minute warning" comment that followed by one councilman [William Baker, 2nd Ward]. It is too bad Father went over a little. The subject was worth it. I found the councilman’s comment rude and unnecessary. It was chastising the priest. The councilman knew it was an exceptional event. Many times we have people speak over the time limit, and the "three-minute warning" is selectively enforced. The comment was not appropriate. The councilman owes Father Joe an apology.
