Bipartisan politics off to a good start in Old Bridge

As a longtime Republican, I would like to comment on the Old Bridge reorganization, which occurred on Jan. 1.

Each of the speakers who were sworn in pledged to work for the people of the township of Old Bridge and to try to do it in a bipartisan spirit.

I have heard things like that many times before, but I was pleasantly surprised when the proof of this bipartisan spirit actually occurred. The new mayor, Democrat James T. Phillips, actually appointed the outgoing mayor, Republican Barbara Cannon, to one of the boards. He also appointed the former Republican chairman, George Koehler, to the Planning Board.

In addition, a majority of the Democratic Township Council appointed the current Republican chairman to the Recreation Board and appointed another Republican council member to a board.

All in all, I believe it was a good start for the citizens of Old Bridge.
