Volunteers will clean up two waterways in E.B. New Jersey Community Water Watch at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, will join with community members to mark Earth Day with cleanups of Ireland’s Brook and Saw Mill Brook, both East Brunswick. The two waterways are tributaries of the Raritan River, a major source of drinking water in Middlesex County. Members of Water Watch and community volunteers will clean up and walk two miles of Ireland’s Brook from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 16. Volunteers will meet at Crystal Springs Family Aquatic Center, 334 Dunhams Corner Road, East Brunswick. Cleanup volunteers, who will be broken up into teams, will receive green-and-black hats and raffle prizes. Water Watch members, Rutgers students and community members, including representatives of the East Brunswick Youth Council, East Brunswick Cub Scout Troop No. 132, the East Brunswick Woman’s Club, the East Brunswick Garden Club and the Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership, are scheduled to participate. Volunteers will restore an area of Saw Mill Brook from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 23. Participants will meet at the brook, located behind the Public Works Building, 4 Harts Lane, East Brunswick. Restoration of the brook is designed to provide a form of natural filtration for local drinking water and restore the brook’s natural beauty. The public is invited to participate in both events.
