Sports Shorts The U12 Old Bridge Rockets soccer team soared to its sixth victory in a row with a 5-2 defeat of the Ocean Tide, Sunday in Ocean. Goaltender Harry Grewal stopped a penalty shot in the first half, while Dan Scalgione chipped in three goals, and Richard Loeffler scored two and supplied two assists. In the past two weeks, the Rockets defeated the Freehold Raptors, 8-3, on goals and assists from Caine Czerula, Adam Eyerman, Christian Llerena, Richard Loeffler, Danny Medina, Josh Stein-Ortiz, and Dan Scalgione. The Rockets also tallied wins over the Toms River Pythons, 2-1, and the Lacey Gunners, 2-1, on a corner kick goal from Christian Llerena to Richard Loeffler and goals from Nick Petruzzi and Dan Scalgione, assisted by Danny Medina and Nick Santurro. Gino Isola, Charles Mantione, Sami Abdishuban, Jordan Moretti, Frank Roselli, Kevin DeMaio and Shawn Orzechowski provided excellent two-way support play throughout the matches. The Old Bridge Hustlers U10 girls softball team continued its winning ways with victories over Hillsborough and Jackson. On Saturday, the Hustlers traveled to a fired up Hillsborough Hustle team. From the beginning, the Hustlers demonstrated their defensive and offensive prowess. Led by Sydney Scheiner’s two triples, the Hustlers exploded for 14 runs. Paige Weo pitched another two scoreless innings to earn the 14-8 victory. Defensive standouts were Kelsey Dunnigan and Kristen Solari. On Sunday, the Hustlers faced a strong and feisty Jackson team in a game that will be remembered for some time. After the Hustlers took a 6-0 lead, the Renegades came storming back to take a 13-8 lead. In the bottom of the sixth and short-handed, the Hustler’s determination was not to be denied, as they were down to their final out. Lead by Sydney Scheiner’s home run and Paige Pentland’s five RBIs, the Hustler’s hurried six runs across the plate to defeat Jackson 14-13 Paige Pentland pitched three scoreless innings for the win. The Hustlers improved to 7-2 leading into this weekend’s Tri-State round-robin hosted by the Hustlers at Old Bridge West High School.

May 17 from 4:30-5 p.m. U17 (Aug. 1, 1888-July 31, 1989) — May 17 from 6-6:30 p.m. U9 (Aug. 1, 1996-July 31, 1997) — May 18 from 4:30-5 p.m. U13 (Aug. 1, 1993-July 31, 1994) — May 18 from 6-6:30 p.m. U14 (Aug. 1, 1991-July 31, 1992) — May 19 from 4:30-5 p.m. U16 (Aug. 1, 1989-July 31, 1990) — May 19 from 6-6:30 p.m. U10 (Aug. 1, 1995-July 31, 1996) — May 20 from 4:30-5 p.m. U12 (Aug. 1, 1992-July 31, 1993) — May 20 from 6-6:30 p.m. Possible rain out dates are May 23 and 24. OBSL uses independent assessors to ensure impartiality during the tryouts. All tryouts are under the supervision of a training director. Team candidates may be called back for a second tryout in order to get the most accurate assessment of each candidate’s skills. All tryouts will be held at the fields on Ticetown Road (see Web site for directions). Come ready to play complete with shin guards, cleats and a ball. Bring a water bottle.
