Sayreville road project deserves the fast track

When it comes to projects as badly needed as the proposed improvements at Bordentown Avenue and Ernston Road, there is no reason why Sayreville should have to wait 10 years or even half that for work to be completed. Certainly, there is plenty of red tape and procedural issues that must be addressed, but Middlesex County officials need to find ways to fast-track the project to completion.

Residents who travel the intersection have for years complained about the congestion, which many times has cars backed up for nearly a mile in any direction.

The borough is eager to see the county, which owns the roads, add three lanes so that traffic flows more efficiently through the intersection. This is a great plan, but as with all major road projects, it is one that will take many years to complete. Borough Council President Frank Makransky this week called on the county to expedite the process as much as possible, saying immediate relief is needed.

Still, county officials warn that it will be quite a bit of time before ground is broken. Hopefully if residents and officials make enough noise, that day will arrive sooner rather than later.
