On a picturesque Sunday afternoon for soccer, the U9 Old Bridge Breakers travel soccer team was on the road for its first matchup against the Twin County Junior Blackjacks, in Brick. On the heels of their spring 2005 JCSL championship campaign, the Breakers wanted nothing more than to make a respectable MOSA debut, against a team they had not met before. From the opening whistle, both teams were eager to strike, yet the first 20 minutes allowed only limited scoring chances for either side, as the main battle was being fought in the midfield region, with solid two-way play by Jake Perlmutter and Nicky Petrozziello. And with the help of the solid defense displayed by Nick Cousillas and Louie Petrozziello, coupled with the ever solid netminding by Breakers goalie Chris Botros, the Breakers shut down the Blackjacks by allowing just two shots in the first half. The stalemate broke in the 21st minute as Breaker Liam Habel converted a nicely placed corner kick from teammate Hazem Miawad, allowing the Breakers to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. In the second half, the Breakers’ offense, led by Jonas Melendez, Chris Cesario, Tyler Earl and Michael Loeffler, turned up the pressure steadily throughout the final 25 minutes with 11 shots on the Blackjack keeper. In the 49th minute, the Breakers were able to put the game on ice with an insurance goal, as Chris Cesario took a throw-in from Nicky P. on the right side and banged into the mesh for a 2-0 Breaker victory. Breaker coaches Glenn Habel and Jim Petrozziello were very pleased with the team’s balanced performance to begin the fall season on a winning note. The team will play host to the Tigers from Tinton Falls in their home opener next Sunday.
