Residents displaced after apartment fire
BY MICHAEL ACKER
Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - A fire that broke out in a Winding Wood apartment building has displaced 12 residents whose apartments were severely damaged.

The fire took place around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, beginning in the bedroom of a bottom floor apartment, according to Sayreville Fire Marshal Kevin Krushinski.

Borough police would evacuate 16 apartments in Building 110, knocking on doors and alerting residents of the fire, according to Krushinski.

The residents of the affected apartments were home at the time, but no injuries were reported.

Two apartments sustained heavy damage, while six others were damaged by smoke, Krushinski said.

He said an active investigation is under way to determine whether the fire was accidental in nature or if it was set intentionally.

Two apartments were gutted, sustaining total fire damage, Sayreville Fire Chief Stamatis Bratsano said, adding that the fire spread from the bottom-floor apartment to the apartment above it.

The fire was put out in a half-hour, Bratsano said. More than 40 firefighters responded to fight the flames.

East Brunswick Fire District 1, Sayreville Fire Truck 1, the Emergency Management Team and the Sayreville Emergency Squad responded to the scene, Krushinski said.

"Quick and aggressive action was taken, so that the loss of property was minimized," Krushinski said, "and I'm thankful that there were no injuries."
