Route 35 gas station robbed by lone gunman

OLD BRIDGE - A man came face to face with cocked steel last week when he was robbed at gunpoint of $191 in cash by a masked man dressed all in black at a Route 35 gas station, according to police reports.

The owner of the K&L Gas and Go station told police that the man who robbed him Aug. 31 at his gas station in Laurence Harbor wore a black bandana, a black baseball cap, a black T-shirt and black boots, and pointed a black automatic handgun at him as the suspect went shopping for cash.

Police reports say the suspect, a white male, pointed the weapon and told the station owner, "Give me the money ... I don't play," after approaching the owner in his booth from the side of the station that is opposite Route 35. The robber was on foot during the robbery, and was not seen in any vehicle.

The suspect made off with $191 before running toward Rowan Way, police said.

The robbery, which took place at 10:04 p.m., would ordinarily have been observed by the shop's video surveillance camera, but according to the owner, the camera broke the day before the robbery took place. There was no information on whether the camera may have been broken by the same perpetrator who robbed the bank.

The owner told police he recalled seeing a white van parked at the station one hour before the robbery, and was suspicious that this vehicle may have been involved.
