Woman robbed outside Sayreville supermarket

SAYREVILLE - A robbery was reported outside the ShopRite on Washington Road at 1:27 p.m. Sept. 9.

A 63-year-old borough woman told police that she was robbed at her car in the parking lot. She had just gotten to her car and started it prior to placing her groceries inside when the unknown suspect struck her repeatedly and took $800 cash and other items from her purse, according to the police report.

The suspect is reported to be a 6-foot-tall, light-skinned black or Hispanic male with a full beard and mustache.

He allegedly approached the woman and asked her for a dollar, and she responded that she did not have any money left. He then struck her in the side of her neck and her head with an unknown, black object.

In the ensuing struggle for the purse, the suspect hit her again in the chest and arm, she told police. The suspect then reached into the purse, took the items and fled the scene.

The victim was transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy after suffering a panic attack and shortness of breath, police said.
