O.B. man, 58, killed on Rt. 9

OLD BRIDGE - A township man was killed Friday when he was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to cross Route 9 on foot.

Ronald Kowalski, 58, died at the scene from injuries caused when a 1999 Honda Civic hit him just south of Fairway Lane around 8:30 p.m.

Todd Mayor, the driver of the Honda, was not charged in the accident.

According to Old Bridge Police Detective Richard Tulko, it appears that Kowalski was not a commuter, but a local resident who was attempting to cross the highway "in an area not meant for pedestrian traffic."

Kowalski was not crossing at a crosswalk, but in between traffic lights in the middle of a block, according to police reports.

The incident is under investigation.

The accident resulted in significant traffic delays on Route 9 north.

Old Bridge police are asking any witnesses to contact Detective Richard Tulko at (732) 721 5600, ext. 3181.
