Family-health learning day scheduled in O.B.

The Bay Family Medicine Practice of Old Bridge will sponsor a health-education program titled "Relax and Learn About Family Health" from 4-7 p.m. on Oct. 18 at 2433 Route 516, Old Bridge.

Participants will have a chance to relax with flavored teas, aromatherapy and foot reflexology while learning how to keep family members healthy. Education will be provided by Bay Family Medicine physicians Betty Hammond, M.D., M.P.H.; Paula Krauser, M.D., M.A.; and Sandra Arango-Fahmy, D.O.

The event will include refreshments and giveaways.

Public invited to shop at rescue squad bazaar

The Old Bridge Volunteer First Aid and Rescue Squad will hold a bazaar from noon to 6 p.m. on Oct. 29 at the squad building, 200 Marlboro Road, Old Bridge.

Members of the public will have the opportunity to begin their holiday shopping with featured vendors including Home Interiors, Pampered Chef, Avon, Tupperware, Creative Memories (scrapbooking), Simply Fun (toys and games), Purely Gourmet foods, Longaberger baskets, Silpada (jewelry), Big Yellow Box (arts and crafts) and Princess House.

VFW ladies auxiliary to host dinner, bake sale

The Ladies Auxiliary of Guadalcanal Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4745 will hold a Roast Beef Dinner and Bake Sale from 3-7 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the post home, 699 Cliffwood Ave., Cliffwood Beach section of Old Bridge.

The menu will include roast beef, vegetables, salad, potatoes and beverages.

Crafts and More Show on tap at St. Thomas

The St. Thomas the Apostle HSA Fall Crafts and More Show is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 14 in the school auditorium, Route 18 south, Old Bridge.

The event will feature handmade crafts, a bake sale, tricky trays, a 50/50 and shopping with select vendors.

'Meeting of Macabre' scheduled at library

The Old Bridge Public Library recently initiated a new Monday Nights at the Library program beginning at 7 p.m. every week at the library main branch, Route 516 and Cottrell Road. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.

The October schedule is as follows:

+ Oct. 16 - "A Meeting of the Macabre," in which "Bram Stoker" and "Edgar Allan Poe" will appear in a dramatic performance, dressed in authentic period clothing, talking about their lives and reading from their works;

+ Oct. 23 - "Unstress for Success: Success in Living, Loving and Working," featuring hypnotherapist Rosemary Conte discussing drugless, inexpensive techniques to relieve stress;

+ Oct. 30 - screening of a classic funny/scary movie with Abbott and Costello.

Registration is not required for the programs.

St. Stan's Rosary Altar Society will offer an Oct. 22 bus trip to Caesar's Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City.

The bus will depart at 10 a.m. from the St. Stanislaus Kostka Church parking lot, 225 MacArthur Ave., Sayreville. Stay at the casino will be six hours. Return is set for approximately 8-8:30 p.m. Donation is $22 per person, with a $17 return in coin. Reservation deadline is Oct. 18. Old Bridge Library to offer Senior Fridays

The Old Bridge Public Library has begun a new Senior Fridays program, featuring free events for older adults, at 1:30 p.m. every week at the library main branch, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

Blue-Trail Hike next up at Cheesequake

A Blue-Trail Hike will begin at 1 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Cheesequake State Park Interpretive Center, 300 Gordon Road, Old Bridge.

Church choir, orchestra to perform Mozart work

The Church of the Immaculate Conception Choir Soloists and Orchestra will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Requiem" at 8 p.m. on Oct. 20 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 18 South St., Spotswood. The performance will honor the Rev. Harold L. Hirsch. Suggested donation is $15.

 

Highland Park to celebrate fall season

The fifth annual Autumn in the Park event, to celebrate the spirit of the fall season in downtown Highland Park, is set for 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 19 along Raritan Avenue (Route 27) from Adelaide to Sixth avenues, rain or starlight.

The free event will feature live entertainment throughout the town, horse-and-carriage rides, hayrides and prize giveaways from many participating merchants.

Live musical performances will fill the town's sidewalks and storefronts. More than a dozen musical acts are scheduled, including Chef Dave and Nikita, The Noisy Neighbors, the John Bianculli Trio and Black Circle Symphony.

Horse-and-carriage rides will wind through Highland Park's streets. Hayrides will follow Raritan Avenue. Israeli folk dancers will be on hand to perform and teach basic steps.

The Passport to Fun drawing will introduce participants to local retailers. By stopping in different downtown stores, individuals may enter the drawing to win gifts and prizes, all donated by participating businesses.

The event is sponsored by Main Street Highland Park, the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, Unity Bank of Highland Park and the Home News.

Interfaith Network to celebrate 10th year

The Interfaith Network of Care (INC) will mark its 10th anniversary with a gala celebration set to begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the East Brunswick Chateau, Cranbury Road.

The event will feature dinner, dancing and door prizes. A cash bar will be available.

Haunted House set for weekends in E.B.

The Middlesex County 4-H Teen Council will sponsor a fundraising Haunted House from 7-11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays through Oct. 28 at the Middlesex County 4-H Center, Cranbury and Fern roads, East Brunswick.

Admission is $2 per person. Proceeds will go to 4-H Project GIFT, a free day of holiday shopping for Middlesex County families in need.

Pumpkin Patch to grow

at Old Bridge church

Simpson United Methodist Church, 2095 Route 516 at Owens Road, Old Bridge, will sponsor a Pumpkin Patch fundraiser from Oct. 14-31, noon to 8 p.m. Sundays-Fridays and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays.

All varieties of pumpkins will be sold. Gourds, Indian corn, cornstalks, candy, baked goods, snacks and beverages also will be available. A children's play area featuring a small "moonwalk," face-painting and live musical performances (on select days) will be offered on weekends.

Seniors offer trip to

'Holiday Spectacular'

Our Lady of Victories Seniors will sponsor a Dec. 10 bus trip to Tropicana Resort and Casino, Atlantic City, to see the "Holiday Spectacular Show."

The bus will depart at 11 a.m. from the lower parking lot at OLV Parish, Main Street, Sayreville. Return will be at 9 p.m.

Children's learning styles to be discussed

County bar foundation offering elder-law DVD

The Middlesex County Bar Foundation recently presented a program on elder law to an audience of 200 seniors at the Piscataway Senior Center.

The program, titled "It's Your Life," was presented by Middlesex County Bar Association members John R. Ross and Michael Feinberg, both experts in elder law.

The seniors, who came from centers throughout Middlesex County, engaged in a question-and-answer session with the attorneys on issues regarding wills and trusts, estate and inheritance taxes, planning for long-term care and Medicare and Medicaid.

The event was videotaped and will be aired on Piscataway cable television. DVDs of the presentation will be made available to the county's senior centers and other cable television stations. A copy of the DVD may be obtained by through the bar foundation office in New Brunswick.

Concert proceeds will aid Daniel Cunnius

A benefit concert featuring artists Spook Handy, Melvin McKnight, Virago, Jeff Mastroberti, Jung Wombats!, Bill Simmons, Bitter Herb and Tommy Anton is planned for 5-10 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Hummers Nite Club, 51 Main St., South River.

The event will be held in honor of Daniel Cunnius, a 48-year-old developmentally disabled man whose deficits make it difficult for him to function without assistance.

All proceeds from the event will go to defray the health-care bills resulting from his mental retardation.

A trauma at birth left Cunnius without oxygen, which led to his mental retardation.

Born and raised in New Brunswick, he was moved to a group home in Pennsylvania at the age of 13. Keystone Community Resources, Scranton, Pa., provides him with staff members who help him live as independently as possible.

Monday Morning panel will hold Oct. 16 forum

The Monday Morning Advocacy Network of Middlesex County will hold its next meeting from 7-9 p.m. on Oct. 16 at the East Brunswick Public Library, conference room 3, Jean Walling Civic Center Drive.

Topic will be "Getting Ready for the General Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 7." Guest speaker Beth Feehan of the NJ HAVA (Help America Vote Act) Coalition will offer an update on HAVA as the election approaches.

Changes in voting as part of HAVA, such as new voters presenting identification at the polls, verified paper trails of votes cast, sound accommodations in electronic voting machines, and more will be discussed.

Other meeting topics will include candidates representing Middlesex County in this year's election; get-out-the-vote efforts and other related issues; plans for the Monday Morning Advocacy Network's November meeting at which accessibility will be discussed with code-enforcement officers from municipalities in Middlesex County; the panel's next accessibility tour; legislative updates; accessible-parking updates; and more.

Halloween Oldies Dance on tap in O.B.

A Halloween Oldies Dance is planned for 8 p.m. to midnight on Oct. 28 at Knights of Columbus Council No. 4815, 61 Pine St., Old Bridge.

The event will feature dancing to the music of the '50s and '60s. Sandwiches, beer, soda, coffee and dessert will be served. Costumes are optional.

Admission is $15 per person in advance, $20 at the door.

Children's Halloween Tricky Tray scheduled
