Children's costume party turns into charity event

The care packages from the Kides' party are ready for shipment to U.S. troops.
SAYREVILLE - When Judy and Nicholas Kides held their fifth annual Halloween Party for their son Nicholas' and daughter Nicole's classmates from St. Stanislaus Kostka School last year, the event was different from the previous years.

The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina brought a desire to help children who were less fortunate. Each child attending the party brought a backpack to fill with school supplies and other necessities. In total, approximately 100 backpacks were filled and were distributed to the families that had relocated to housing in the local areas. Other remaining backpacks were sent to New Orleans and affected areas in the South.

This year's party brought a new cause, and more success helping others. Throughout the day's festivities at the Kides' Sayreville home, the kids packed several care packages to send to U.S. troops in Iraq. Each child brought soap, razors, shaving cream, baby wipes, non-perishable food items, magazines, DVDs, puzzles and prepaid phone cards.

"Most if not all of the children have been coming to this party every year," said Sharon Condiracci, sister of Judy Kides, "and this year's proved to outdo last year's events, and I'm sure next year's will be even better."
