Man, 28, recovering from gunshot wound

SAYREVILLE -- A Shrewsbury man was in fair condition earlier this week after being shot outside a borough strip club at 2:50 a.m. last Thursday.

The 28-year-old victim, David Riley, received surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, after suffering a gunshot wound to the stomach, according to Sayreville police Detective Mathew Bandurski. He was later upgraded from serious condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Riley was shot by an unknown suspect in the parking lot of the Colosseum Nite Club on the northbound side of Routes 9 and 35. He then drove away from the club and called 911. Patrolman James Satorski and South Amboy Sgt. James Norek found him conscious and lying on the ground next to his vehicle at a NJ Transit service building near the railroad tracks in South Amboy, Bandurski said.

First aid workers provided Riley with care on the scene, and a medical intensive care unit transported him to the hospital.

There was no information regarding the circumstances of the shooting, and police are asking that any witnesses call (732) 525-5436.

The shooting was reported to police after officers had already responded to what may be an unrelated report of simple assault at 2:12 a.m.

The assault was reported to police by a dancer who said she was assaulted inside the club, which recently began providing live female dancing entertainment, according to police. Police reported that the victim had no signs of injury, and no arrest was made.
