O.B. fire dept. recycles cans for burn patients
OLD BRIDGE - The South Old Bridge Fire Department is one of more than 30 fire departments and corporations throughout the state that has helped raise more than $1.4 million over the past 20 years for the Aluminum Cans for Burned Children program (ACBC).
"We are happy to help such a fine program. The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas is the top in the tristate area and provides invaluable fire prevention programs to the community," said Chief Robert Verney of the South Old Bridge Fire Department.
Money raised through the ACBC recycling program is used to purchase items and services that are essential to the recovery of pediatric burn patients at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. These items, which are not covered by insurance, might include special protective clothing that helps skin heal or bicycles that help youngsters exercise injured arms and legs.
Funding provided by the ACBC program also enables the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation to provide community burn education programs in schools, such as its Fire Safety House, a mobile education program that travels the state teaching children and adults about fire safety and burn prevention in the home.
Since 1999, the Old Bridge Fire Department has raised more than $5,800 through the ACBC program. Residents who wish to help support the fire department in its participation in the ACBC program are encouraged to drop off their aluminum cans at the firehouses, located at 14 Throckmorton Lane and 958 Englishtown Road in Old Bridge.
The Burn Center at Saint Barnabas, New Jersey's only certified burn treatment facility, provides care to burn victims and their families throughout the state. Through the support of the Saint Barnabas Burn Foundation, burn prevention and educational programs have been presented to schools, local businesses, corporations and communities across New Jersey.
