Parents should pay for full-day K

This letter is in regard to the article titled "All-Day Kindergarten Recommended in Old Bridge" that appeared in the Feb. 1 issue of the Suburban.

At a time when New Jersey property taxes are such a hot political issue, Old Bridge is considering the institution of a full-day kindergarten program. I do not doubt the benefits of such a program, but I have a problem with it being funded by a property-tax increase.

Superintendent of Schools Simon Bosco is quoted as saying, "It's not going to come free, and it's not going to come that easy." Many parents are willing to pay for preschool and day-care programs that are voluntary; full-day kindergarten should be treated the same way.

The parents of the participating children should pay for a large part of the cost of the program. That way, the parents of the targeted children will decide how important the program is, and the Board of Education will not make the decision.
