Green takes over GOP

SAYREVILLE - Borough Republicans have selected retired police Lt. Ron Green to be their next party chairman.

Green, who has twice run unsuccessfully for Borough Council, will succeed Ken Olchaskey, who is stepping down after several years as the party leader.

Green ran for council each of the past two years, and came a few hundred votes shy of beating Democratic incumbent Stanley Drwal in November's election.

With the Democrats winning two seats in each of the past two council elections, they now maintain all six seats on the Borough Council. Mayor Kennedy O'Brien, the only Republican on the governing body, will be up for re-election this November.

Republican Party Treasurer Irv Tischler also stepped down and is being succeeded by Marylou Koslov.

The vote of the Republican Municipal Committee was unanimous for both offices.

"I was hoping to retire last year and have Ron step in, but everyone wanted him to run for council, and he ran a great race," Olchaskey said in a press release from the party. "If Ron works half as hard as chairman as he did as a candidate, we will have a council majority in no time."

Green said he is honored by the show of support from the municipal committee.

"Our first order of business will be to re-elect Mayor Kennedy O'Brien and to elect two Republican councilmen this year," he said. "Since the Democrats seized control of the Borough Council a year ago, they have raised taxes to unprecedented levels while disrespecting the office of the mayor."

Green said there has been a lot of interest from potential council candidates on the Republican side.

"The public is appalled at how the Democrats are governing, and people want an alternative," he said.

The Sayreville Republican Party's vice chairwoman is Beverly Rappleyea, while Rosetta Fisher is secretary and Marylou Koslov is treasurer. The party's Web site address is www.sayrevillegop.com.
