'Irish Renaissance Man' will appear in concert

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the Folklife Program for New Jersey will present Mick Moloney, "The Irish Renaissance Man," in concert at 7 p.m. on March 7 at the Princeton Alliance Center, at the intersection of Scudders Mill Road and Schalks Crossing, Plainsboro.

Moloney is a tenor banjo player who also sings and plays the mandolin, mandola, bouzuki and guitar. He and fellow performers Robbie O'Connell, Dana Lyn, Tim Collins and Niall O'Leary will present an evening of music, stories and dance.

Admission is free of charge. Registration is required. The center is an accessible site; an assistive-listening system will be in use during the program.

Funding for the concert is provided in part by the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission; the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders; the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts; and by funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The event is presented in association with the Plainsboro Recreation Department and Arts Commission.

Sayreville Public Schools sets kindergarten sign-ups

Sayreville Public Schools will soon begin accepting kindergarten registration for the 2007-08 school year.

Parents may pick up a registration packet at their respective schools from March 1-12. An appointment to register a child may be made upon completion of the paperwork in the packet and after the child has had a physical examination.

The school nurses may be reached as follows: Arleth School, Judith Berg-Friel, (732) 525-5242; Eisenhower School, Edith Braun, (732) 525-5231; Truman School, Sharlene Kenny, (732) 525-5213; Wilson School, Joy Pollack, (732) 525-5237.

Students entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 31.

The following documents and/or information must be presented when registering:

+ child's official birth certificate;

+ physician's certificate indicating that the child has received the necessary immunizations as required by the state Department of Health;

+ physician's certificate indicating that the child has received a Mantoux test for tuberculosis within six months of the start of the school year, unless he or she is required to do otherwise under current state regulation;

+ physician's certificate indicating that the child has had a complete physical examination, including a vision and hearing screening, within a year of September entrance;

+ proof of residency as documented by a certificate of occupancy, deed, mortgage agreement, borough tax bill or lease.

The registration of a child will not be completed until all the required documents have been submitted.

To provide residents with more information about the district's kindergarten program, parents and children will be invited to an orientation in their respective schools in May or June.

Sponsorships available for Winkler event

The Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley, East Brunswick, still has sponsorship opportunities available for its primary fund-raising event of the year, "An Evening With Henry Winkler," set for 6 p.m. on March 22 at the East Brunswick Jewish Center, 511 Ryders Lane.

The fundraiser will feature the well-known actor, producer, director and best-selling children's author as he shares his story of struggle and triumph. Despite dyslexia, Winkler received degrees from Emerson College, Boston, and the Yale School of Drama, New Haven, Conn., and has achieved great professional and personal success. Punctuating his anecdotes with humor, Winkler will speak about his careers, his education and his commitment to Judaism. Solomon Schechter Day School of Raritan Valley is a private Jewish school serving students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Art @ Lunch events to continue at museum

The Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick, has added several events to its ongoing Art @ Lunch series.

The public is invited to join Zimmerli curators and art historians as they discuss changing themes and artists from the museum's permanent collections and special exhibitions. A reception, featuring light refreshments and conversation with the day's guest speaker, will follow.

The half-hour gallery talks will begin at 12:15 p.m. in the museum's main lobby. Program participants will receive a 10-percent discount in the museum store on the day of the event.

The upcoming schedule is as follows:

+ March 7 - "American Art," from the early post-colonial period through the modern period, with Alfredo Franco, curator of education;

+ March 21 - "Natvar Bhavsar: The Dimensions of Color," including approximately 50 paintings representing more than 35 years in the career of the artist, with senior curator Jeffrey Wechsler.

Art @ Lunch talks take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month. The programs are free of charge with museum admission ($3 for adults, free of charge to Rutgers University students and faculty with identification).

Environmental panel slates trip to flower show

The Lawrence Brook Watershed Partnership (LBWP) will sponsor a March 10 bus trip to the Legends of Ireland Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Philadelphia.

Participants will walk through more than 50 full-scale gardens, including Irish Celtic Cloisters and backyard displays. There will be free demonstrations, how-to tips from gardening experts and free culinary demonstrations by chefs from the Philadelphia Art Institute. A live traditional Irish music-and-dance show will be performed.

The bus will depart at 9 a.m. from LBWP Headquarters, 85 Washington Ave., Milltown. Departure from the convention center is set for 5 p.m.

Cost is $50 and includes bus transportation and show admission.

A light refreshment will be offered on the bus.

SAG meeting to feature greeting-card workshop

The next monthly meeting of the Suburban Artist Guild (SAG) of Central New Jersey will be held at 2 p.m. on March 9 at the East Brunswick Library in the municipal complex, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive. SAG board members will meet at 1 p.m. on the same day.

Paula Feifer will conduct a greeting-card workshop. Based on their preferences, members should bring supplies they will need. Artists may bring their own card stock or it will be provided for a small fee.

The public is invited to attend an exhibit and sale of SAG members' multimedia paintings through March 30 at Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Route 1, North Brunswick.

Tickets available for trip to see 'Il Circo'

Our Lady of Victories Seniors will sponsor a March 25 trip to Bally's Palace Theater, Atlantic City, to see "Il Circo." The show features acrobats, dancers and comedic audience interaction.

The bus will depart at 11 a.m. from the lower parking lot at Our Lady of Victories Parish, Main Street, Sayreville.

Return will be at approximately 9 p.m.

Cost is $40 and includes bus transportation, a $25 show ticket and $15 return in cash.

Harlem Wizards to appear in Spotswood

Spotswood High School Project Graduation 2007 will sponsor a fund-raising basketball game, featuring the Harlem Wizards vs. Spotswood High School students, administrators and teachers, from 7-10 p.m. on March 10 in the gym at the high school, Summerhill Road. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Highlights will include a halftime audience-participation show, a 50/50 and basket raffle, an autograph session with the Wizards, a tricky tray and door prizes. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Advance tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for students.

All proceeds will be used to host a drug- and alcohol-free night for graduating seniors.

Leroy Cooper School, Old Bridge, will sponsor a Night at the Races fundraiser from 7 p.m. to midnight on March 2 at the Holiday Inn, Route 35 south, Hazlet. Post time is 7:45 p.m.

The event will feature horse races, a tricky tray, raffles, a 50/50, prizes, a buffet and cash bar.

County resident wins VFW essay contest

Sarah VanNess, representing District No. 8, Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Ladies Auxiliary, Middlesex County, recently won the district, state and national awards in the VFW Patriotic Pens Youth Essay Contest. The essay theme was "Citizenship in America."

Sarah, who was sponsored by VFW Post and Auxiliary No. 5479, Dunellen, received a college scholarship.
