Obituaries
Edward C. Merski
Mr. Merski, 85, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, died March 3, 2007, at home. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed as a maintenance foreman for 13 years with the borough of Sayreville. Prior to that, he worked at Hercules Inc., Parlin, and National Lead Industries, Sayreville, and was a self-employed builder, carpenter and cabinetmaker. Surviving are his wife, Marie Zamorski Merski; three sons, Dr. Edward of Matawan, Richard, and his wife, Donna, and Paul, and his wife, Kira, all of Vienna, Va.; four daughters, Anne Marie Scupp of South Carolina, Cynthia Ruszala, and her husband, Tony, of Edison, Joyce Nelson, and her husband, Frank, of South Amboy and Gail Wilhalme, and her husband, Marc, of Monroe; a sister, Florence Trojanowski of Sayreville; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass was offered at Sacred Heart Church, South Amboy. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Parlin.
Frances Berry
Ms. Berry, 66, of Jackson, died March 7, 2007, at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she had resided in Queens, N.Y., and Orlando, Fla., for 22 years before moving to Jackson one year ago. She is survived by four sons, Louis Rios and Steven Rios, both of Jackson, Cedric Rios of Old Bridge and Albert Betancourt of New York City; and two daughters, Yvonne Kercado of Freehold and Karen Hernandez of Jackson. She was also a grandmother and great-grandmother. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. Interment was private. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Henry P. "Hankal" Brezniak
Mr. Brezniak, 81, of Middletown, formerly of Spotswood and Old Bridge, died March 3, 2007, in Laurel Bay Rehabilitation Center, Keansburg. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was employed as a pipe fitter with National Lead Industries, Sayreville, where he worked for 35 years. His wife, Catherine Zolnerovich Brezniak, died in 1985. Surviving are three children, Diane Smith, and her husband, LeRoy, of Hancock, N.Y., Henry Brezniak, and his wife, Regina, of Spotswood and Ronald Brezniak, and his wife, Janet, of the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge; a brother, John "Babe" Brzezniak of Middletown; a sister, Jean Cholewa of Sayreville; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Services were held at Maliszewski Funeral Home, South River. Interment was in Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery, South River.
Henry R. Johns
Mr. Johns, 71, of the Madison Park section of Old Bridge, died March 12, 2007, in Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was employed as a chemical operator with Peter J. Switzer, a division of Kimberly Clark, Spotswood, where he worked for 26 years. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Frank Moran Jr. Surviving are his wife, Rose Mary Karpovich Johns; a daughter, Regina Moran of Old Bridge; a son, Henry R. Johns Jr., and his wife, Kathleen, of Freehold; his mother, Harriet Johns of Bethlehem, Pa.; two sisters-in-law; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Services were held at Carmen F. Spezzi Funeral Home, Parlin section of Sayreville. Private cremation followed.
George H. Driscoll
Mr. Driscoll, 83, of Sayreville, formerly of East Brunswick, died Feb. 27, 2007, at home. His wife, Stella Chamas Driscoll, died in 1984. Surviving are a son, Timothy Driscoll, and his wife, Ramonette, of Florida; a daughter, Kerry Joan of Sayreville; two brothers, James of Long Island, N.Y., and Robert of Florida; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. A Mass was offered at Immaculate Conception Church, Spotswood. Interment was in Holy Cross Burial Park Cemetery, South Brunswick. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association hospice program or to Deborah Hospital.
James Casey
Mr. Casey, 73, of East Brunswick, died March 6, 2007, in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Casey; two sons, Patrick Casey and Michael Casey; a daughter, Colleen Escarate, and her husband, Antonio; a sister, Catherine Hogrefe; and three grandchildren. A Mass was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Entombment was in Holy Cross Burial Park Mausoleum. South Brunswick.
Charles H. Nielsen
Mr. Nielsen, 90, of East Brunswick, died March 7, 2007, at home. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he was an electronic technician with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, East Brunswick, where he worked for many years. His wife, Mary Ann Hayes Nielsen, died in 2004. Surviving are three sons, Barry J., and his wife, Sharon, of South Amboy, Christopher H. of Helmetta and Jon C., and his wife, Tess, of Avon; a daughter, Lynn M. Kasics, and her husband, Larry, of South Amboy; and six grandchildren. Services were under the direction of Cremation Services of Central New Jersey, East Brunswick. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
John Travis
Mr. Travis, 79, of Beachwood, formerly of Sayreville and Old Bridge, died Feb. 28, 2007, in Community Medical Center, Toms River section of Dover. His wife, Helen Popis Travis, died in 2003. Surviving are a son, Jack Travis, and his wife, Ginny, of Marlboro; three daughters, Beverly Porzio, and her husband, Alan, of Manchester, Donna Jacobs, and her husband, Bill, of Beachwood, and Kathy Respass, and her husband, Kevin, of Lakewood; a sister, Rose Cook of New York; and seven grandchildren. Services were held at Rezem Funeral Home, East Brunswick. Entombment was in Forest Green Memorial Park Mausoleum, Morganville section of Marlboro.
Irene Harsanyi Bush
Mrs. Bush, 90, of New Brunswick, died Feb. 28, 2007, in Reformed Church Home, Old Bridge. She was predeceased by her husband, John, and by a son, Leslie. Surviving are a son, Richard, and his wife, Lynn, of South River; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Bush, Jennifer Lynn Hensley, Jason Bush, Leslie Bush and Brian Bush; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. Entombment was in Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.
