Boro man arrested after chase into Staten Island
BY MICHAEL ACKER
Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - A car chase that began in the borough ended with the suspect flipping his vehicle over in Staten Island last week.

The pursuit began at approximately 9:17 p.m. April 16, when officer Jason Mader was on patrol in the area of Raritan Street and Main Street and observed a 1996 Dodge pickup truck strike a curb, according to Sayreville Police Detective Mathew Bandurski.

Mader activated his lights to signal a motor vehicle stop, but the driver, David Wasilewski, 36, of Washington Road, accelerated the vehicle to 35 mph and continued onto Routes 9 and 35, going 60 mph. He then crossed the bridge over the Raritan River, with Mader following him onto Route 440 northbound into Staten Island. Wasilewski drove over the Outerbridge Crossing at 70 mph, Bansurski said.

The New York Port Authority was notified of the pursuit, Bandurski said, which continued through an E-ZPass toll booth with Wasilewski speeding excessively, Bandurski said. The suspect ultimately lost control of the pickup truck while exiting to get on the West Side Highway, flipping the vehicle over onto its roof.

Wasilewski then exited the vehicle and appeared to be holding something that was wrapped around his hand, police said.

"In a loud manner, he kept saying, 'Shoot me,'" Bandurski said.

Mader used pepper spray on Wasilewski and apprehended him with the help of Port Authority police officers and the New York Highway Patrol. The officers would find that Wasilewski was not holding anything in his hand.

Wasilewski showed no visible signs of injury and refused medical treatment, Bandurski said.

Sayreville police took the suspect to headquarters, where he was charged with eluding police, reckless driving, unsafe lane change, careless driving and driving with a suspended license. An assistant district attorney in New York is not pursuing charges against Wasilewski, Bandurski said.

Wasilewski reportedly told police that he fled because his license was suspended.

He was taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, where his bail was set at $10,000 with no 10 percent option.
