Several arrests made after melee at Abyss Police from four towns respond to club for major disturbance BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE - A large fight at a Route 35 nightclub resulted in six arrests last weekend.
Police were called at 1:35 a.m. Sunday for a disturbance involving hundreds of people in the parking lot of Club Abyss.
The fracas spilled out onto the northbound side of the highway, stopping traffic several times before the crowd was brought under control at 2:24 a.m., according to police.
Club security, who were reportedly not marked as security or staff, were attempting to break up several fights, but were unable to control the crowd, police said. Also, club patrons initially resisted police efforts to clear the parking lot.
Police said the crowd had been at the club for a night in which entertainment was being provided by Big Dennis and DJ 187. Police made note of the fact that "187" refers to the California penal code for murder.
An injured male victim was found in the far end of the Club Abyss parking lot near the neighboring F-1 Motoring business. The man, whose identity was not disclosed, was treated by paramedics from Raritan Bay Medical Center and members of the Morgan First Aid Squad.
Another person was bleeding after having been struck with a beer bottle, police said.
Police charged Mikel J. Sajouste, 25, of Hillside, with failure to disperse, resisting arrest, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct. Sajouste was arrested after he allegedly would not leave the area and attempted to hit Patrolman George Lestuck.
Police used an expandable baton to strike Sajouste in the thigh and place him under arrest. Sajouste reportedly continued to resist, kicking and shattering a window in a police vehicle. He was sprayed with a burst of O.C. spray and taken to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick, without further incident.
Police arrested and charged Denard C. Trapp, 21, of Red Bank, with resisting arrest, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and failure to disperse. Trapp was being held by security personnel when police offered to let him go if he vacated the area. Once Trapp was released, he reportedly refused to leave the area and was subsequently arrested.
Trapp resisted police efforts to detain him, kicking and damaging the right rear window and door frame of the police car that he was being held in, police said. Officers also sprayed him with O.C. spray.
Trapp later complained of an injury to his hand at police headquarters and was transported to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division. However, Trapp refused medical treatment at the hospital and was then transported to the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center without incident.
Police arrested Aljabril E. Schenk, 24, of Newark, on a charge of failure to disperse. Schenk reportedly disobeyed police orders to stay away from patrol cars that were holding prisoners.
Police also charged Sharif J. Cheatham, 20, of Hillside, with disorderly conduct; Jahmier T. Lewis, 19, Freehold, with disorderly conduct; and Jeff Mayo, 24, of Vauxhall, with hindering apprehension and disorderly conduct.
Several police departments responded to the scene to assist Sayreville police. Officers came from South Amboy, Old Bridge and Perth Amboy.
No injuries were reported to authorities or EMT personnel at the scene.
A riot was reported at the club last year in an incident where two people were stabbed. Police made three arrests at that time.
Violence at borough clubs has been an ongoing issue in recent months and has become an occasional topic of discussion among borough officials, particularly with regard to how the problem should be addressed. Mayor Kennedy O'Brien has proposed a so-called "three strikes" ordinance for borough clubs where criminal activity has taken place, while Borough Council members have sought to address the issues informally on a case-by-case basis.
