Sports Shorts The Old Bridge Junior Knights Mite B ice hockey team left for their year-end tournament in Lake Placid, N.Y., with high hopes of winning the gold medal on the 1980s miracle rink. The first game was a tough one: the boys lost to the Flyers Youth, 6-2. After this game, the players were more determined than ever to try their hardest to get the gold. The next games were not easy, but the boys came through with wins over the N.J. Devils, 6-0, the N.Y. Rye Rangers, 6-4, and the Philadelphia Blazers, 9-2. It was history repeating itself as they met the Flyers once again in the Gold Medal Game on April 1. The Mite Bs would not be April fooled into letting the Flyers walk away with another win against them, not a chance. The championship game had all the excitement and energy of an NHL game, right down to the wire. The boys played their hearts out and ended up winning 6-5 with 14 seconds left in double overtime. What made it even more special was looking in the stands to see the many other Old Bridge players, coaches and families who stayed to root the boys on. What a fantastic time the team had in Lake Placid - walking through town and seeing spots of purple everywhere. The Mite B players are Mathieu Schroeder (goalie), Jack Meany, Mitchell Shafer, Bjorn Kvaale, Tyler Kogut, Robert McKiernan, Sam Lasker, Danny Hack, Eric Manoukian, Julian Kislin, Branden Kushnir and Steven Saporito.
