Teen Career Day on tap for May 19 at library

Students in middle school and high school are invited to the Old Bridge Public Library's first Teen Career Day set for 1-5 p.m. on May 19 at the library main branch, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

The event will offer teens the opportunity to ask questions and get answers about careers and occupations that interest them. Professionals from law enforcement, health and fitness, medicine, finance, communications and other areas will be in attendance.

Registration will be held from 1-2 p.m. on the day of the program. Speakers will offer presentations throughout the library from 2-5 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Old Bridge Public Library, the Kiwanis Club of Old Bridge, the Old Bridge/Sayreville Rotary Club and the Old Bridge Township High School Interact Club.

Teens sought for roles in Villagers' 'Seussical'

Auditions for the upcoming Villagers Theatre TeensVill production of the musical "Seussical" are set for 7 p.m. on May 17 and 20 at the theater, DeMott Lane, Somerset section of Franklin.

The production will be cast with teens ages 13-19 only. Performance dates will be July 27, 28, 29, Aug. 3, 4, 5, 10, 11 and 12.

Interested teens should prepare 16 bars of a song in the style of the show (no songs from "Seussical" may be used) and are encouraged to be familiar with the show. Readings will be from the script.

Boating-safety exam scheduled for May 12

Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-1, 167 Main St., Sayreville, will conduct a Boating Safety Test Out Examination at 9 a.m. on May 12.

Individuals who take the exam must have been born prior to 1979 and certify that they have at least 100 hours of boating experience. Proof of age must be provided prior to taking the examination.

Cost for the test is $25. Successful completion will certify an individual for the New Jersey State Boating Safety Certificate that is now a state law. The exam may be taken only one time.

for garden workshop

Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County will hold the first Earth Center plant sale and "Basics of Tree Care & Pruning" garden workshop May 19 beginning at 10 a.m. at the EARTH Center, 42 Riva Ave., Davidson's Mill Pond Park, South Brunswick.

The sale will feature starter plants raised by the Middlesex County Master Gardeners. The selection includes heirloom tomatoes, perennials, annuals, flowering vines and vegetables. The sale will end at 4 p.m.

The two-hour workshop will teach how to maintain the health and shape of plants. Fee is $20, and preregistration is required by May 16.

St. Mary's choral society concert May 20

The St. Mary Choral Society will present "From the Sublime to the Ridiculous: Serious and Silly Choral and Instrumental Music" May 20 at 4 p.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 256 Augusta St., South Amboy.

There will also be a special performance by the church's bell choir. Featured will be pieces by various composers. Refreshments will be provided. The concert is free and open to the public, but donations are appreciated.

The program has been made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State.

Nativity of BVM rummage sale May 12

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) Catholic Church, 80 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick, will hold an outdoor rummage sale May 12 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (rain date May 19). Health fair coming to Old Bridge Senior Center

The Saint Peter's University Hospital Mobile Health Unit will be on hand at the Senior Week Health Fair set for 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on May 23 at the Old Bridge Senior Center, Route 516 and Cottrell Road.

A bone-density test will be available to determine if an individual is at risk for fractures or osteoporosis.

Participants sought for community flea market

The Sayreville Recreation Department will sponsor a community flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 2 at the Borough Hall Soccer Fields, Main Street.

Fee is $10 per table for residents, $20 for nonresidents. Registration is going on from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Mondays-Fridays, at the Mickey Sedlak Recreation Center, Dolan Street.

Safe-boating course

coming to Sayreville

Coast Guard Flotilla Auxiliary 2-1, 167 Main St., Sayreville, will offer "America's Boating Course" from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, May 14-23. Cost of the four-lesson course is $55, including textbook. A New Jersey Boating Safety Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

Walk 'n' Roll to mark building of new hospital

Children's Specialized Hospital, the country's largest pediatric rehabilitation hospital, will celebrate the construction of its 10th and newest facility, PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital-New Brunswick, with a Walk 'n' Roll set for May 19 in Johnson Park, Piscataway. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

Walk courses are 1, 2.5 or 5 miles. Wheelchairs, bikes and wagons are welcome.

The public is invited. There will be free food, music and children's activities following the walk.

The new hospital will care for children affected by traumatic brain and spinal-cord injuries as well as special needs due to premature birth. The 60-bed inpatient center is expected to open in early 2008, joining Children's Specialized sites in Mountainside, the Toms River section of Dover, Fanwood and Hamilton.

Cyclists sought

for MS Bike Tour

The Mid-Jersey MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Coast the Coast Bike Tour is set for May 19 and 20. Cyclists may choose from a 25-, 50-, 85- or 170-mile tour.

Proceeds from the event will raise money to fund research and programs to address the challenges of MS.

Tickets on sale for Polish-Style Dinner

St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church Holy Name Society will sponsor a Polish-Style Dinner from 5-7 p.m. on May 19 in the cafeteria at St. Mary's School, Jackson Street, South River.

The menu will include homemade pierogi, stuffed cabbage, sauerkraut and kielbasi, potato, vegetable, rye bread, coffee and dessert.

Cleanup will raise

awareness of Darfur

The Committee on Conscience-New Jersey will sponsor a cleanup of Summerhill Road between Cranbury Road and Ryders Lane, East Brunswick, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on May 19.

Interested individuals, who will meet at the Bagel Cafe, 647 Route 18, East Brunswick, are invited to pick up trash and raise awareness about the genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Participants should wear a T-shirt that makes a statement. The event will begin with a letter-writing campaign to local newspapers. Talking points will be provided.

Mill. Lions Doo-Wop Night May 12

The Milltown Lions Club will hold a Doo-Wop Night May 12 from 7:30-11 p.m. at American Legion Post No. 25, JFK Boulevard, Milltown.

Harlem Wizards

to appear in Old Bridge

The St. Ambrose School PTA, Old Bridge, will sponsor a fundraising basketball game, featuring the Harlem Wizards vs. St. Ambrose faculty and basketball coaches, on May 17 in the gym at Carl Sandburg Middle School, Route 516, Old Bridge. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Woman's club sets

installation dinner

The East Brunswick Woman's Club will hold its annual Installation Dinner at 6 p.m. on May 15 at the East Brunswick Chateau, Cranbury Road.

Boy Scout Troop 3 will hold its first golf classic May 21 at 1 p.m. at Concordia Golf Club, Monroe. Hole sponsorships are still available.

The format will be four-man scramble, and the fee is $100 per player. Individuals may enter alone and will be placed on a team. A dinner and prizes will follow the classic. Proceeds will help to send the Scouts to the 2010 National Jamboree in Virginia.

The Monday Morning Advocacy Network of Middlesex County will hold its monthly meeting 1-3 p.m. May 14 at the East Brunswick Public Library, 2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive.

Members will have the opportunity to address code-enforcement and traffic-safety officials from three municipalities in Middlesex County on the topics of building accessibility and the enforcement of accessible parking laws. Plans for an activity in June to deal with problems at the New Brunswick train station will be discussed.

The meeting will feature a celebration honoring Larry Rivera on his retirement as director of the Middlesex County Office for the Disabled.

Villagers announces auditions for 'Tape'

The Black Box at Villagers Theatre will hold auditions for "Tape," a drama by Stephen Belber, May 14 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the Franklin Township Municipal Complex, 415 Demott Lane, Somerset. Two men and one woman, age 20-35, are needed.
