Teen accused of threat to shoot people at EBHS 16-year-old arrested for alleged posting on Internet Web site BY BRIAN DONAHUE Staff Writer
EAST BRUNSWICK - A 16-year-old student at East Brunswick High School was arrested Monday for allegedly telling an Internet forum that he intended to shoot 35 people at the school before detonating himself.
The male student, who was not found to possess any weapons or means of carrying out the threat, was charged with terroristic threats and false public alarm. He is being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center in North Brunswick.
Police said the student posted his threat in a forum on the social networking Web site, Facebook.com. In the posting, the student asked where he could obtain a "suicide bomber vest" and stated that he was going to go to his school and shoot 35 people before detonating himself, according to police. There was also a reference to the recent killings at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.
An unidentified person from out of the area who saw the posting on the Web site sent an e-mail to East Brunswick High School to alert them of the threatening message.
Officials at the high school received the e-mail Monday morning and immediately called the police. The 16-year-old was arrested at the school the same morning after being called to meet with the school resource officer.
A follow-up investigation led by police Detective Kevin Zebro confirmed that the student had posted the statements, police said. However, searches carried out at the suspect's residence and his school locker did not turn up any additional evidence or weapons, and police said there was no evidence that the suspect took any steps to actually implement the threats posted on the Web site.
"There is no evidence that this lad had any means whatsoever to carry out any of the threats," said police Lt. William Krause.
The suspect asked where he could obtain a suicide bomber vest, but police do not believe he took any other steps to get one.
"This was all done in one statement," Krause said. "He asked if someone knew how to get one, then it rolls right into the statement about shooting 35 people."
Krause said he was not certain what type or category of discussion forum the suspect was communicating in at the time.
The reason for the suspect's postings was unclear, and police said that is still under investigation.
The school district could not comment specifically on the situation because it is a confidential student matter, though Patricia LaDuca, coordinator of community relations and programs, spoke briefly on the nature of the situation.
"Everyone, students included, need to realize that these kinds of matters will be taken very seriously, and that there has to be consequences," LaDuca said. "Nothing is more important to us than the safety of our students and staff, and it is very important that the community knows that the schools are safe."
