Childhood Cancer Survivors Night slated

The Institute for Children with Cancer and Blood Disorders will sponsor an educational event for childhood cancer survivors and their families on June 7 at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, 195 Little Albany St., New Brunswick. Health and informational exhibits and a light dinner are set for 6 p.m.

Guest speakers will be featured beginning at 7:15 p.m.

Families and members of the public will have access to many educational exhibits including the late effects of cancer therapy; nutrition and healthy cooking for children, with tips from a professional nutritionist; promoting healthy lifestyles; fertility and cancer; bone health and osteopenia; a cancer-survivor toolbox; The LITE Program, in which the same nurses who cared for cancer patients while they were in the hospital will coordinate with the patient's current health-care providers and make recommendations for care; The Lance Armstrong Foundation; The Sharing Village (self-help/educational organization dedicated to the social, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of cancer survivors); The Childhood Cancer Survivor's Equestrian Program, Bedminster; neuropsychological testing with Children's Specialized, Mountainside; The Resource Room at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey; and The Institute for Children.

Guest speaker will be Stuart Kaplan, M.D., F.A.A.P., executive director of Camp Make-A-Dream. In addition, there will be a panel of eight adolescent/young adult cancer survivors.

Panel members will discuss topics based on their experience; any social, emotional or physical consequences from their treatments; and how they overcame the consequences to lead productive lives.
