The Sayreville Riverdogs 12U baseball team captured the Cheesequake Memorial Day Tournament with a hard-fought 4-2 final game victory over a very good Garden State Knights team. The Riverdogs earned a spot in the championship game by compiling a 3-0 record in division play by besting the Red Raiders 3-1 and East Brunswick 13-5 on Saturday and the Roberto Curatuolo team 6-1 on Sunday. Fine pitching performances in the division round by Christian Campbell, Brandon Bielak, Michael Kaefer, Anthony Ungano and Peter Mellos led the way. In the championship game Brandon Bielak and Peter Mellos pitched through some tough spots to earn the victory. Some timely hitting by Danny Saxon, Matt Rivera, Matt Bouthillette, Josh Lowe, Richie Johns (who also made the play of the game by blocking home plate in the championship game and tagging out the potential tying run) and Jordan Pickus also contributed to the championship run. Coaches Brian Bielak, Bob Bouthillette and Nick Mellos guided the team through some tough spots and made all of the right moves to earn the title.
