Mailbox vandals deliver damage throughout boro BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE - Several residents woke up Friday morning to find their mailboxes had been knocked off their posts.
Ten incidents of criminal mischief were reported Friday by residents around the borough. The reports were similar to incidents that occurred last month on Ridge Avenue, where seven mailboxes were smashed during two consecutive weekends, according to police.
The 10 incidents Friday were at residential properties on streets off Washington Road and Main Street.
Three were reported in the area of Main Street, east of Pulaski Avenue. Those mailboxes were at homes on Standiford Avenue, Miller Avenue and Bright Street. Two reports came in around 1:25 a.m., another was reported later in the morning. One of the three homeowners told authorities that this was not the first time the mailbox was damaged, and estimated that it will cost roughly $140 to replace.
It appeared that the damage may have been caused by someone hitting it with a baseball bat, according to the police report.
Another victim reportedly heard a loud bang in front of the house, followed by the screech of a vehicle driving off.
The remaining seven incidents all took place on residential streets off Washington Road. Two occurred on Henry Street, where one resident discovered the damage at 5:54 a.m. The other Henry Street victim found the damage at 6:19 a.m.
On Coyle Street, which is east of Minisink Avenue and a few blocks from Henry Street, a mailbox was smashed sometime after 1:30 a.m. A witness saw a suspicious white car in the area and heard three individuals outside the home that night before noticing the damage at 6:30 a.m.
Four metal mailboxes were smashed on Swider Drive, located near Lakeview Drive. The damage was discovered at 7:49 a.m., according to police.
Authorities are asking anyone with information on those responsible for the damage to call the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 525-5400.
