Reunion honored highly regarded teacher, school

A remarkable thing happened recently at the East Brunswick Public Library. For two hours the magic of Weber School, East Brunswick, was rekindled in a warm reunion of former students and teachers.

Walt Young, teacher emeritus extraordinaire, was honored by some 50 of his former third-grade students, now well into their 30s, 40s and 50s. Many were accompanied by their own children or even by their parents.

If you weren't lucky enough to go to Weber or to be taught by Walt Young, Connie Harris, Karen O. Manetta, Peggy Shine, Howie Herbert or Jan Morosco, you missed an outstanding learning experience in a special four-room schoolhouse with a nurturing, welcoming feel. The superb teaching at Weber extended beyond the three R's to include respect, responsibility and regard for others. Walt personified that and more; he still does.

The hugs were genuine as Weber memories were shared around student pictures more than a quarter-century old. True, you can't turn back the clock, except on very rare days in the presence of old friends.

Thank you, Mr. Young. Bon voyage. You will be leaving a lasting piece of yourself in countless hearts.

Mae Caldwell
