Board members volunteer time for children

As an employee of the Sayreville Board of Education and a resident of Parlin, I must comment on the "Your Turn" guest column, "Disappointed with board's behavior, decisions" (by Barbara Kilcomons, Suburban, June 7).

Kilcomons wrote: "When people invest their time and energy and have no political agenda, they should not be subject to any type of disrespect or ridicule from a board member or administrator." That goes both ways. The board and administration should not have to be the target of accusation and innuendo by a group of people that have no idea what the board and administration do on a daily basis. Times change and today there are more funding and state and federal reporting requirements than ever.

Board members volunteer untold hours of their time and energy, without political agenda, to make sure their children, and every child in Sayreville, receives the best education possible with the limited resources available. Remember, it was the public that voted down courtesy busing, not once, but twice.

The cost of educating a child today is enormous and until this state comes up with a better way of funding education, it is our duty to do the best we can for our children.

Don't malign this board and our administrators until you've walked a mile in their shoes. Theirs is not an easy job, yet they give 200 percent each and every day and they truly care about their staff, their town and most importantly the children. They certainly have my respect and support, and I hope you'll give them yours.
