The U18 Girls Old Bridge Roadrunners completed their final season with six wins, one loss and three ties, coming in second out of nine teams in their bracket. They also came in second place out of five teams with two wins, a tie and one loss in the Hopewell Memorial Weekend Classic.
The Old Bridge Roadrunners were originally formed as a U8 team 10 years ago. They have been able to stay together for that long despite the loss of their first coach, Mark Shulman, in the 9/11 tragedy. Assistant coach Elliot Reiter and Joseph Rumolo took over the team after Mark's loss and kept it going until this year as all the girls prepare to go to college in the fall.
Jamie Shulman (Mark's daughter), Lori Reiter, Laura Rumolo, Stacy Dimaggio and Jenna Yeo were original Roadrunners and with the team through the end. Also with the team for eight years were Allison Daniello, Angela Defillipo, Jessica Emley and Rachael Kosmyna. And joining the team during their high school years were Veronica Gragnano, Katlyn Fitzpatrick, Alexis Heim, Alyssa Tacopino, Lauren Bottitta, Amanda Fuller and Michelle Penny.
Ten different girls scored goals during the Roadrunners' final and most successful season, and, fittingly, the final touch in the final game went to Jamie Shulman.
The Old Bridge Lightning 13U baseball travel team advanced to the final round of the USABL 13U division by beating the previously unbeaten Jackson Rampage this past weekend, 1-0. This league consist of 42 teams, and the Lightning are one of five teams remaining for the championship. Talk about a pitchers' duel, Geoff Nemeth of the Lightning allowed only three hits against the Rampage, who have an incredible record of winning all over the state. Geoff kept the hitters off-balance as the Lightning's defense was perfect all game long. The infield was highlighted by Don Kenderish, Vincent D'Acunto, Matt Wagner, Brad Terpanick and Mike Yacabonis, while the outfield did not allow a ball to hit the ground and was highlighted by Jesse Magliulo, Dan Decker, James Valentine and Anthony Jischetti. Stephen Weir was a rock behind home plate and did not allow a runner to steal a base all game. The Lightning collected eight hits throughout the game, but the biggest hit, with two outs, came from James Valentine, who battled an 0-2 count to 3-2 after fouling off eight balls and eventually connected with a hard line-drive down the left-field line to bring home the winning run. Several attempts by the Rampage to score were all thwarted as the Lightning played their best game as the game got more intense.
