OBPD to offer summer Youth Police Academy

Individuals ages 10-17 are invited to take part in the upcoming Old Bridge Police Department (OBPD) Youth Police Academy.

Four sessions are available:

+ July 9-13 - grades 5 and 6;

+ July 16-20 - grades 7, 8 and 9;

+ July 30-Aug. 3 - grades 10, 11 and 12;

+ Aug. 13-17 - grades 5 and 6.

Classes will begin at 8 a.m. and end at approximately 12:30 p.m.

The program, which is designed to provide an awareness of the law enforcement field, will include classes in physical fitness training, crime-scene investigation, substance abuse prevention, and police canines. The course is not a boot camp for troubled youth. Instruction will be similar to police academy training.

All recruits will be required to adhere to a strict code of conduct and dress. Each recruit will receive a youth academy T-shirt and hat.

Upon completion of the course, graduates will be issued a certificate and an Old Bridge Police dog tag. The Old Bridge Fraternal Order of Police and Police Benevolent Association will sponsor a lunch on the day of graduation.

Fee is $60. Applications will be accepted on a first-come basis. Space is limited. Parental consent is required to participate in the program.

All applications should be downloaded from the township Web site at www.oldbridge.com. For more information, e-mail Jennifer Palumbo or Denise Triolo at obpolice@oldbridge.com or call (732) 721-5600, ext. 3434 or 3150.
