Artists' fading vision to be topic of lecture

The Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission will present "Eye of the Beholder," a free visual-arts lecture with Phyllis Rakow, at 6:30 p.m. on July 17 at East Jersey Olde Towne Village, 1050 River Road, Piscataway.

Rakow will offer information on how the creative process of many well-known painters in Western art history has been affected by less than 20/20 vision. The slideshow-style presentation will demonstrate how visual disabilities have impacted the color, line and form of many famous works of art. Slides of artworks by Cezanne, Renoir, Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, Pissarro and Cassatt will be shown, comparing the artists' early techniques and styles with those seen later in their careers. Light refreshments will be served.

The program is funded in part by Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Middlesex County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The village is an accessible site. An assistive-listening system is available and will be in use during the program. An American sign-language interpreter will be provided without charge with a two-week advance request. Wheelchairs also are available upon request for visitors who may need assistance from the parking lot to the program.

For more information and to register, call the commission at (732) 745-4489. Individuals with hearing disabilities may dial (732) 745-3888 (TTY users only) or 711 via the New Jersey Relay System.
