E.B. man arrested in Sayreville murder Police: Suspect had over ounce of cocaine on night of shooting BY BRIAN DONAHUE Staff Writer
Police charged an East Brunswick man Monday in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Sayreville June 28.
Telik K. Pittman, 24, of Lois Street, was charged with the murder of Marquis Maing, who was shot while seated in a car with his girlfriend in the parking lot of the Winding Woods development on June 28, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office. The girlfriend, Tina Castaldo, 19, who shared an apartment with Maing in Old Bridge, was also shot several times but is recovering from her wounds.
Although Pittman "purposely or knowingly caused the death of Marquis Maing," according to a statement from the Prosecutor's Office, authorities did not say whether Pittman actually fired the shots. At least one other person is believed to be responsible for the shooting, the Prosecutor's Office said.
No weapons have been recovered.
Police picked up Pittman on Friday at the Motel 6 on Stelton Road in Piscataway on outstanding warrants unrelated to the murder. A subsequent investigation resulted in his being charged on Saturday with possession of more than 1 ounce of cocaine with the intent to distribute. A complaint signed by Sayreville police Detective Amy Noble alleges that Pittman had the cocaine on the night of the murder, citing the recovery of evidence and further investigation as probable cause for the charge.
On Monday, Sayreville police Detective Richard Belotti signed the murder charge against Pittman based on witness statements and the results of a joint investigation by Sayreville police and the Prosecutor's Office.
Pittman is being held at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center, North Brunswick. State Superior Court Judge James F. Mulvihill set his bail at $1 million with no 10 percent option.
The murder took place shortly before 11:45 p.m. on June 28. At that time, police responded to the Winding Woods complex, off Bordentown Avenue, and found Maing and Castaldo seated in a car, each with multiple gunshot wounds.
Maing was pronounced dead at 12:33 a.m. at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Castaldo, who was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, in critical condition was released from the hospital last week.
Despite the cocaine charge, authorities did not say if the motive for the shooting was related to drug activity.
Sayreville Borough Council President Thomas Pollando noted that none of the parties known to be involved thus far were borough residents.
"Whatever was going down ended up in Sayreville," he said.
Regardless, he was pleased that an arrest had been made.
"That's a good thing," he said.
The investigation is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Richard Belotti at (732) 727-4444 or Investigator Eleazar Ricardo of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-4239.
