Man, 41, shot himself accidentally, police say

SAYREVILLE - A Morgan man accidentally shot himself last week after finding a gun near his house and taking it home, police said.

John Mosinak, 41, of North Morgan Avenue, was walking along the railroad tracks in the Morgan section when he found the .22-caliber revolver and brought it into his screened-in porch, according to Sayreville Police Detective Mathew Bandurski. Police are not sure if he was looking at the gun or attempting to take it apart when the gun went off, landing a bullet in his right thigh at 2:15 p.m. July 19.

The Morgan First Aid Squad responded and transported Mosinak to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, for treatment of his injury.

Police recovered the gun on the porch, which is detached from the home. Bandurski said the weapon is old and there is no serial number on it, making it difficult to trace, but the detective bureau is investigating.

Incidents such as this are very rare, Bandurski said, stressing that anyone who finds a weapon should call the police immediately.

"Contact us right away," Bandurski said. "You don't know what is inside and unfortunately in this case, there was live ammo. If you find something, don't touch it. It could be booby trapped."
