Cops describe man's home as a hazard BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
OLD BRIDGE - A Bayview Drive home was condemned after emergency responders found that it was not properly cared for last week.
Police were dispatched to the Laurence Harbor residence at approximately 1 p.m. July 31 for an assistance call after the occupant of the home, a 71-year-old, fell down.
Upon entering the home, Officer Matthew Atlak reported that he and Officer Patrick D'Onofrio immediately detected a strong odor due to the presence of numerous cats, and urine and fecal matter in the household. They reportedly found the man lying naked on the floor.
Police inside the home reported fleas crawling on their arms and later, in their police vehicle. Atlak and D'Onofrio would later be decontaminated at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division. Their uniforms, belts, boots, bulletproof vests and watches were destroyed.
The elderly Bayview Drive resident was removed from his home and decontaminated in a designated area outside.
The Laurence Harbor Fire Department, township code enforcement officials, Middlesex County Hazmat employees and the county Department of Public Health also responded to the scene. Workers who went inside the house wore Tyvek suits with respirators, according to police. The home was secured by code enforcement officials.
Township animal control personnel recovered six cats and set traps for several other cats that fled the home.
"The cats were infested with fleas," Old Bridge Police Lt. Robert Moser told the Suburban.
The elderly man was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, but reportedly did not sustain any serious injuries.
