Environmental concerns to be topic in Sayreville

Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. (D-N.J.), Assemblyman John Wisniewski (D-19) and Sayreville Borough Council President Tom Pollando recently announced plans for a special borough meeting to be held at 7 p.m. on Aug. 29 in the council chambers at Sayreville Borough Hall, Main Street. Discussion will focus on environmental concerns in Sayreville, including superfund sites.

Pallone, Wisniewski and Pollando invite residents to attend the meeting, where representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will be on hand to listen to concerns and answer questions.

Sayreville residents have recently voiced concerns about the number of cancer instances in the borough, calling for investigation into whether the area is a "cancer cluster." The borough contains four superfund contamination sites. A superfund area is defined by the EPA as "an uncontrolled or abandoned place where hazardous waste is located."
