Steel mill to hold meeting for concerned residents
SAYREVILLE - Gerdau Ameristeel will sponsor what it described as a community information session at its steel mill on North Crossman Road tonight.
Residents can come at any time between 5-8 p.m. to learn about what the mill is doing to improve its operations and address the concerns raised by neighbors, according to a press release from Gerdau Ameristeel.
Homeowners who live on neighboring streets have raised concerns over the past several months of a "black dust" material that accumulates on their properties. Last week, workers from two environmental labs took samples from several residential properties and they are currently testing those materials to determine its content and origin. The testing is being funded by Gerdau Ameristeel.
At tonight's meeting, company representatives will be present to provide information about the mill's operations, report on improvements under way to reduce environmental and community impacts, and address questions or concerns about dust, noise, odor and any other issues of interest, the press release states.
"We're committed to working with the community and being a good neighbor," Mark Quiring, plant manager, said in the press release. "We want to get to know our neighbors better, and help them to know us better, and this information session is one way to do that. So I hope members of the community will come out and ask questions about issues that concern them so we can address their concerns by talking to them one on one."
The mill has also established a "community action line" at 866-543-1835 for people to call if they have any questions, comments or concerns.
Gerdau Ameristeel is the second-largest minimill steel producer in North America, with an annual manufacturing capacity of more than 9 million tons of recycled steel products.
