OBHS students get 'pinked up' for filming of musical

Kacie Frey (l-r), Ross Hecht and Stefania Flecca wait inside the Palace Theatre in New York prior to the MTV taping of the Broadway musical "Legally Blonde."
OLD BRIDGE - Students in Lisa Glide's studio drama class enjoyed a rare treat last week when they got to see "Legally Blonde" in New York and be part of MTV's filming of the Broadway musical.

And perhaps best of all, it was free of charge.

Ron Mancini, the drama student teacher from Kean University, entered a contest run by Classic Entertainment Group and won 38 tickets to the Sept. 18 event. The tickets included 30 for the students in the orchestra section and eight for the chaperones in the balcony.

MTV taped the $10 million show at the Palace Theatre and at a later date will broadcast the entire performance.

"Sitting third row, center, for free was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Ross Hecht, a 17-year-old senior at OBHS. "Live, professional theater, especially Broadway, is always a great learning experience. Combining the excitement of Broadway with cameras and celebrities made this an unforgettable and educational experience."

The trip came about after Classic Entertainment Group posted "a free ticket casting call" and searched for fans of "Legally Blonde" who were interested in attending the filming. However, in order to attend the free performance, ticket holders had to meet two stipulations - they had to be between the ages of 15 and 25, and be dressed in pink.

The students, along with Glide, spent a week coming up with pink costumes, including tuxedos with pink shirts and ties, pink canes, pink sunglasses, pink glitter eye makeup and pink accessories.

"Legally Blonde" was filmed three times, including once in its entirety, once without an audience, and then, on Sept. 18, giving the footage a more interactive feel.

"Seeing MTV's filming of 'Legally Blonde' was an absolutely amazing experience for everyone involved," Mancini said. "How often do we get to see a Broadway musical for free and have the chance to appear on television all in the same night?"

Mancini noted that many of the drama students had never seen a Broadway show before.

Glide said she was proud of her students' professionalism amid all the excitement of the event.

"They were the real stars of the night," she said.
