Feds arrest boro resident in drug bust Steroids, guns recovered from borough home BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE - Federal authorities arrested a borough resident on drug and weapons charges last week.
Special agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and the FBI obtained a court-authorized search warrant for the Rhode Street home of 34-year-old resident Alfred Scarpa. There, they seized over 40,000 doses of illegal anabolic steroids and two semi-automatic handguns in the search, which was conducted at 8:16 a.m. Sept. 20, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Detective Mathew Bandurski of the Sayreville Police Department said that borough police including Patrolman Michael Kurtz were dispatched to the scene to assist federal agents with the warrant. While borough police secured the area, the federal agents searched the home.
Alfred Scarpa was arrested later when he arrived home, Bandurski said.
Federal authorities subsequently filed a criminal complaint against Scarpa, charging him with knowingly and intentionally manufacturing, distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute anabolic steroids.
Authorities recovered a .40-caliber Springfield semi-automatic pistol and a .40-caliber Glock Model 23 semi-automatic pistol from the suspect's home.
Scarpa allegedly maintained a "substantial, active and ongoing laboratory used for the manufacturing of anabolic steroids" in the basement of his home, according to FBI Special Agent Bryan Lee Travers.
Travers said Scarpa has been the subject of an investigation since 2005. Travers wrote that law enforcement obtained records of dozens of transactions where Scarpa wire-transferred money in the amount of at least $25,000 through Western Union.
Scarpa allegedly negotiated the purchase of steroid powders that are converted into usable anabolic steroids for distribution. The 40,000 dosage units of steroids found at the suspect's residence include the following liquids: boldenone undecylenate, stanozolol, Anadrol, Primobolan, trembolone acetate, testosterone, and nandrolone. In addition, federal authorities seized 10,000 miligrams of clomiphene citrate compound.
Investigators reportedly found laboratory equipment for mixing and producing steroid doses at the scene.
Scarpa's credit card records indicated that he made multiple purchases from entities that sell laboratory supplies used to convert steroid powders into usable anabolic steroids and other steroid products.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Esther Sales, who authorized the search warrant on Scarpa, ordered authorities to detain the suspect in federal court in Newark last week.
