Savvis opens data center to serve N.Y. and N.J.

Savvis Inc., a global leader in IT infrastructure services for business and government applications, has opened a data center in Piscataway. The company aims to address the growing demand for integrated hosting and network services in the New York and New Jersey area, according to a press release.

The new facility has approximately 47,000 square feet of raised floor space and employs 25 people. It provides customers 140 watts/square foot of conditioned power delivered by a five bus electrical system and backed up with uninterruptible power supplies and diesel generators.

"The new Piscataway facility allows us to serve the high concentration of life sciences firms in New Jersey, as well as lead- ers in the financial services industry based in and around the New York metropolitan area," said James Whitemore, chief marketing officer of Savvis.

To protect customers' applications and data, Savvis indicated that its Piscataway data center "maintains extraordinary security, power, cooling, and failover standards." This involves 24-hour security features including guards, video monitoring systems, false entrances, vehicle blockades and bulletproof glass and walls. Entrance pods, "man traps" and a biometric entry system are designed to ensure that only authorized personnel are granted admittance to the facility.

Savvis now operates 24 data centers in the U.S., Europe and Asia, encompassing more than 1.1 million square feet.
