Thermometer exchange scheduled for Oct. 11

The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, in cooperation with the borough of South River, will sponsor a mercury-thermometer exchange from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11 at the South River Senior Center, 55 Reid St.

County residents may turn in their old mercury thermometers and receive a new mercury-free digital thermometer, free of charge. Businesses and schools may not participate in the event.

Thermometers should be transported in their storage cases. If a storage case is not available, residents should deliver the thermometers in a zippered plastic storage bag.

Mercury thermometers may break in the home, spilling a material that can be a health hazard, especially to young children.

One new digital thermometer per household will be provided (while supplies last), regardless of the number of mercury thermometers dropped off.
