Boro sees rash of car break-ins over week
BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - Eight motor vehicles were either broken into or damaged on residential streets over the past week.

Police are investigating the crimes, which occurred between Sept. 26 and Tuesday. Some of the victims whose vehicles were entered told police they had left their cars unlocked while parked in the driveway.

The most recent incidents occurred in the Parlin section, where motor vehicles parked on roads off Pointe of Woods Drive were struck on separate days this week.

In one incident, the windshield of a white 2005 GMC van owned by PSE&G was smashed on Woodlake Drive near the substation. The suspect also made scratch marks along the driver's side of the vehicle. This happened between 10:30 p.m. Sunday and 4:30 a.m. Monday.

A tan 1988 Honda Civic was broken into while parked in front of a rental office on Grobelny Drive in Parlin between 9:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and 9 a.m. Friday. Several old registration cards and the vehicle's front license plate were stolen. Items that were inside the glove compartment were thrown around the interior of the car, and the radio was damaged in the suspect's attempt to take it out of its casing.

Criminal mischief to a motor vehicle was reported in the rear parking lot of building 58 in the Winding Wood apartment community at 8:41 a.m. Sept. 27. An unknown suspect vandalized a blue 2002 Dodge Intrepid, flattening one of the tires. The victim told police that the vehicle has been vandalized in prior unreported incidents, and that adolescent males are frequently seen vandalizing vehicles in the complex. The victim also told police that the vehicle was parked in a parking lot away from the victim's building, since a neighbor's vehicle was vandalized in a past incident in the closer parking lot.

A silver 2005 Hyundai Elantra that was parked in a driveway on Marshall Place was broken into on Sept. 27. The suspect stole the victim's insurance card, driver's license and spare change.

Four motor vehicles were entered at residences located within a quarter of a mile of each other on roads off Main Street between Sept. 25 and 27.

Police reported that a resident of Pulaski Avenue had an Initial brand GPS unit worth $495 stolen from a black 2008 Ford F250, which was likely left unlocked between 8 p.m. Sept. 26 and 3 p.m. Sept. 27.

Theft from a white 2000 Ford Ranger was reported in the driveway of a residence on Hillside Avenue between 12:30 a.m. and 7 a.m. Sept. 27. Various papers and other items were scattered across the front passenger seat of the vehicle, which had been left unlocked. The suspect allegedly stole around $20 worth of loose change and two folding knives.

A neighbor of the Hillside Avenue victim reportedly heard the car alarm of his own vehicle that was parked in his driveway sound off at 2 a.m. Sept. 27. The suspect failed to gain entry into the neighbor's vehicle.

A Garman GPS system and a cell phone charger were stolen from a silver 2000 Toyota Tundra parked in a driveway off Quaid Avenue sometime between 11 p.m. Sept. 25 and 6 a.m. Sept. 26. The vehicle was reportedly left unlocked.

A silver 2001 Volkswagen Jetta was burglarized at a Main Street residence sometime between 11 p.m. Sept. 25 and 7:10 a.m. Sept. 26. Multiple items were taken from the unlocked vehicle, including 10 compact discs, a wristwatch, a jeans jacket and a cell phone charger.

Anyone with information on these incidents is asked to call the Sayreville Police Department at (732) 727-4444.
