Chinese drama first up at library film festival

The annual Fall International Film Festival at the East Brunswick Public Library, Jean Walling Civic Center, will begin on Oct. 16 with 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. screenings of the Chinese drama "Together." The PG-rated 2003 movie, which will be shown in its original Mandarin with English subtitles, has a running time of 116 minutes.

Themes of love and sacrifice underscore the film's emotional story, based on the reallife experiences of its director, Chen Kaige. Wanting the best for his violin-prodigy son, an impoverished rural Chinese peasant brings the 13-year-old boy to Beijing. With each encounter in the city, the boy becomes further removed from his roots. The clashing values of modern China are reflected in the boy's journey of self-discovery.

All films in the library festival will be shown in their original languages, with English subtitles as needed. Admission is free of charge. Reservations are not required.

The festival is sponsored by the Friends of the East Brunswick Public Library. Martha Hess will introduce each film.
