Boro man killed while riding bike on highway
BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - A 32-year-old borough man died last week when he was riding his bicycle on Routes 9 and 35 and was struck by a minivan.

Richard Fotia, 32, of Washington Road, had been riding in the area of the Parkway Motor Lodge when his bicycle collided with a 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan at 9:50 p.m. Oct. 2, according to borough police.

Fotia had reportedly been in the left lane on the southbound side of the highway, but shifted right and entered the path of the Caravan in the center lane, resulting in the collision. The minivan driver, George Olsen, 64, of Freehold, was not injured, though the van sustained heavy damage.

Police Officer Jason Mader, of the Sayreville Police Department, said he was driving behind the Caravan that struck Fotia. Mader, who pulled over and called for additional units, reported that other southbound motorists struck the victim several more times. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Olsen, who police said displayed no signs of having consumed alcohol, was taken to Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy division, for a blood test. The results of blood tests on both the victim and the driver are expected to be complete in four to six weeks, according to Sayreville Police Detective Mathew Bandurski.

The section of the highway where the accident occurred was closed from approximately 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Traffic was rerouted to Chevalier Avenue and to South Amboy with the help of the New Jersey State Police, Bandurski said.

Patrolman Brian Gay and Sgt. John Bartlinski are investigating the accident, including the possible involvement of a Hyundai Elantra whose driver contacted police later.

The Sayreville Police Department is asking that anyone who witnessed the accident or who has information pertaining to it call (732) 727-4444.
