Police: Drunken driver led high-speed chase on Rt. 35 BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE - Police say a South Amboy woman was driving under the influence when she allegedly led officers on a 95 mph car chase down Route 35 last week.
Kelly A. Leader, 37, was arrested around 1 p.m. Oct. 5 after a series of events that began with a man flagging down Patrolman Joseph Przybylowski near Old Spye Road and Route 35. The man said that he had been with Leader, who had passed out at a location on Tyler Street and then woke up and fought with him to retrieve the keys to a green 1993 Ford Explorer.
Przybylowski arrived to find Leader in the passenger seat of the Explorer, parked on a Tyler Street driveway. She allegedly refused the officer's assistance and jumped into the driver's seat of the vehicle, then drove out of the driveway, narrowly missing the police vehicle. Police said she then led the officer on a chase northbound on Route 35.
Przybylowski reported that he followed Leader with his lights activated and sirens blaring, as she allegedly weaved in and out of traffic and cut other motorists off at an excessive rate of speed of approximately 60 mph.
Leader then stopped her vehicle in a parking lot near Al's Auto Body and Portia Street, and got out of the car on Przybylowski's orders. However, she then got back in the car and sped away, going even faster than before, according to police.
A second patrol officer joined the pursuit, and Przybylowski observed that they were now going 95 mph. He informed dispatch of his speed and continued on Routes 9 and 35 toward a bridge, which was under construction. Police terminated their pursuit of Leader at the bridge, where the shoulder lane was closed with orange traffic cones.
Leader then reportedly slowed to 50 mph and stopped on the shoulder at the top of the bridge, where police blocked her exit and placed her under arrest.
In addition to being charged with driving under the influence, Leader was given summonses for reckless driving, failure to maintain a lane, unsafe lane change, tailgating, failure to pull over for an emergency vehicle, failure to use turn signals, failure to wear a safety belt, and failure to change address on driver's license and on New Jersey registration.
