Offers suggestion for homeless problem
Ican't believe what I was told. A homeless man who was sleeping in the New Brunswick railroad station was picked up and fined $250. He must either pay the fine or go to jail. Considering all our religious and sanctimonious elected officials, wouldn't you think that they would have provided a humanitarian solution to house homeless men?

Imagine being homeless yourself. Where would you sleep at night in the winter, in the hot summer, or on rainy or snowy nights? Where would you keep your meager belongings if you were lucky enough to get a job, and if you're seeking a job, what address would you give to your potential employer? What do you think your mental state would be as a homeless individual?

There are approximately 450 homeless men in Middlesex County. Only 40 are sheltered all year-round, with approximately another 30 sheltered in the winter through a Christian/synagogue program. Shouldn't we do better than that?

I suggest that the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders consider building two dormitory-type facilities, one in New Brunswick and one in Perth Amboy. Each facility would house 250 men on cots, and each resident would be provided with a locker to store belongings. I'm sure the freeholders could obtain costs for such a proposal and submit same to the public for comments.

The ugly situation of homeless men needs a solution now, not 10 years from now.
