Steel mill to host info session
SAYREVILLE - Gerdau Ameristeel will hold a community information session at its steel mill on North Crossman Road from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 8.
The mill is inviting residents to visit at anytime during those hours, and learn about what the mill is doing to improve its operations in light of concerns that neighbors raised regarding a "black dust" material that some have found accumulating on their properties.
The steel mill hired an independent lab to take wipe samples that professionals took from residents' properties. However, the tests were deemed inconclusive.
Edison Wetlands Association (EWA), a local environmental group, hired a firm earlier this year to test samples of the dust and reported that it contained high levels of mercury, arsenic, lead and chromium. Sayreville Business Administrator Jeffry Bertrand has said that despite the EWA's contentions, the test results found by the mill's hired laboratory do not indicate that there is any health risk to residents who live near the mill.
Company and borough representatives will be on hand Nov. 8 to provide information about Gerdau's initiatives to reduce environmental and community impacts, and to discuss the recent dust sampling results and a planned air-sampling program.
Toxicologist and epidemiologist Dr. Charles Gilbert will assess the dust wipe sampling results and discuss the next steps. Gilbert's presentation is expected to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
