Marching unit takes top honors

SAYREVILLE - It was hooray for the home team during a recent statewide band competition.

During the USSBA New Jersey State Championship event Oct. 27 at Sayreville War Memorial High School, some 40 bands from three groups, or categories, competed from all over for the state title.

Sayreville competed against 20 bands to win the Group 1A USSBA New Jersey State Championship. In addition, Sayreville swept all five caption awards, winning for Best Music, Best Visual, Best Effect, Best Percussion and Best Color Guard. Sayreville also swept each subcaption that makes up the special award captions.

This marked the first New Jersey state title for the Sayreville marching unit in school history.

One week prior, Sayreville captured its third consecutive Central Jersey Regional Championship, capturing four out of five special awards - Best Visual, Best Effect, Best Percussion and Best Color Guard.

The band will seek its first Northern States Regional Championship since 2001 on Nov. 11.
