Man charged with DWI after accidents
BY MICHAEL ACKER Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE - Police arrested a Parlin man after he allegedly crashed his car and destroyed property on two county roads around 11 p.m. Nov. 13.

Steven Baist, 24, was charged with driving while intoxicated after police located him at his parents' house on Vincent Street following the accidents, according to police.

Police first responded to the area of Bordentown and Kenneth avenues, where Baist allegedly drove his green 1995 Dodge Ram pickup truck over the grass median. The driver allegedly damaged a "No U-turn" traffic sign near the Claremont building.

Police found tire tracks that went through the front lawn of a home in that area of Bordentown Avenue. Also, concrete landscape blocks were knocked over during the incident.

Soon after, police were dispatched to Kennedy Park, off Washington Road, where Baist allegedly jumped a curb near the entrance, sped into a bush and destroyed a decorative block wall, before leaving the scene.

Patrolman Anthony D'Onofrio was patrolling the area of Vincent Street when he saw a flashlight turn off as he got closer to Baist's home. D'Onofrio found the car Baist was driving parked in the driveway of his parents' property.

The patrol officer observed water and mud all over the front seat, floorboard, side and wheel wells of the pickup truck, along with other damage that was consistent with reports from the incidents at Kennedy Park and Bordentown Avenue.

Baist reportedly answered the door after D'Onofrio knocked, and was arrested after it was determined he was intoxicated, police said.

Police reported that Baist was driving with a suspended license, and also issued him with summonses charging him with the destruction of recreation property, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, failure to report a motor vehicle accident and driving an uninsured vehicle.
