Sayreville bowling teams look to continue fast start
Last season the boys squad went 22-0 during the regular season and reached the semifinals of the GMC tourney before bowing to St. Joseph's. The Bombers also finished third in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III competition, but only the top two teams advance. Sayreville could be even better this time around, with three returnees who averaged more than 200 pins apiece in the lineup. Brian Nicholas led the team with a 218 average, followed by Camryn Nieves and Matt Wasielewski at 213 pins and 208 pins, respectively. In addition, senior Matt Walczak averaged 198 pins. Another senior, Marcin Golebiowski, has broken into the lineup in a big way. Golebiowski rolled a 269 game and a 690 series in Sayreville's win over Perth Amboy. Junior Mike Savarese, who is capable of rolling into the 190s, rounds out the starting six. The Bombers also have plenty of depth, including juniors Michael Chuntz, Derek Kopek and Andrew Siarkiewicz, as well as sophomore Glenn Sauer. All will see action throughout the season, coach Mike Weinert said. There are also several freshmen who will be vying for playing time. "Our team is young but experienced, and after last year, we have higher expectations," Weinert said. "We want to win the White Division again and we also want to make it at least to the GMC final. I think we're capable of going farther in the state tournament, too." For the girls, the 2-0 start is reason for encouragement following a season where many of the bowlers were in their first varsity season. "For the most part, our girls didn't have great averages, because they were learning as they went," Weinert said. "The important thing is that they didn't get discouraged. Many of them worked very hard over the summer, and I can see the improvement. The team is looking a lot better." Kristin Olesky should once again be the Bombers' top roller. Now in her fourth varsity season, Olesky posted a 160 average as a junior. She already has a 200 game to her credit in the Bombers' win over Perth Amboy. Sayreville's other starters include senior Katie Cavanaugh, juniors Carol Sarrouf and Steph Bisaha, and sophomores Tracy Karpinski and Lee Ann Cerbone. The girls have plenty of depth as well with juniors Maria Ligato and Ashley Parse, sophomores Alexes Correa and Sabrina Patni, and freshman Kristin Renz on hand. "I think our girls can do well and finish high in the division," Weinert said. "What we really want to do is win games against teams like South Plainfield, who beat us twice last season. Beating them early has helped our confidence, and that's very important when you're trying to turn things around. We have some talent, and if they continue to gain confidence, they'll win a lot of matches." |
