Gunman robs Quick Chek

SAYREVILLE - An armed robber stole an unknown amount of money from a borough convenience store yesterday.

The suspect entered the Quick Chek on Main Street at 2:35 a.m., pulled out a silver handgun and demanded money from the clerk, according to Sayreville Police Detective Mathew Bandurski. The suspect then walked around the counter and told the employee again, "Put the hands up and give me the money, or I'll shoot you," Bandurski said.

An employee gave the suspect money, and the gunman told the employees not to move or to call authorities, or he would shoot them. The suspect then fled.

At the time of the holdup, two employees, ages 19 and 20, were working at the store, located near Crossman Road.

The suspect was described as possibly being a black male, according to police. Since his face was obscured by a camouflaged hood, further description of the suspect's face could not be provided. The suspect was wearing blue jeans and a dark sweatshirt with a figure on the chest.

Police are currently investigating the incident. They were not yet certain whether the suspect drove away or fled on foot, since no one was in the parking lot at the time of the robbery, Bandurski said.

Bandurski asked that anyone who may have seen someone running or driving away from the area of the Quick Chek at a high rate of speed call Detective Richard Belotti at (732) 727-4444.
